From backyard games in South Africa to emerging as one of the brightest all-round talents in Irish cricket, Chris de Freitas’s journey is a story of passion, perseverance, and purpose.
As he edges closer to making his senior debut for Ireland, his path is not just about stats and milestones. It’s a testament to resilience and adaptation across continents and cricketing cultures.
A Cricketing Foundation Built in South Africa
Chris’s love for cricket took root in his childhood, sharing spirited games with his brother in the garden. “From there on I just loved the game,” he reflects.
Growing up in a cricket-rich environment in South Africa, he benefited from excellent facilities and coaching. “Playing a lot of school cricket helped with gaining match experience and learning about your game. Provincial tournaments like Cubs Week and Coke Week gave exposure to high-level cricket.”
These formative years carved the foundations of a player who would soon take on new challenges far from home.

New Beginnings in Balbriggan
The opportunity to join Balbriggan Cricket Club marked a pivotal moment. “I got offered an opportunity and, with my EU passport, decided to give it a shot outside South Africa,” Chris shares.
His decision was also shaped by personal circumstances back home. “There were a few problems back in South Africa, and I didn’t really want to go back to play there anymore.”
Settling in Ireland wasn’t without its hurdles. “Adapting to the slower pitches and the weather was tough,” he admits. But Balbriggan proved a welcoming environment: “I felt very welcome, and it was easy to settle in. I’ve really enjoyed my time with the club so far and my teammates.”
Chris has already helped Balbriggan lift the Championship title, the Premier League crown, and the Alan Murray Cup. The team also finished as runners-up in the All-Ireland T20 league, an impressive resume.
But Chris is far from satisfied: “I’m hungrier than ever to win more with Balbriggan. There’s still a lot left to achieve with this team.”

Club Impact and Development
Balbriggan has been central to Chris’s development as a cricketer. “The club has backed me since day one. The support in every game, the excellent facilities, and now the new indoor centre. It’s all helped push my game to the next level.”
His impact at the club has been substantial, crucial runs, important wickets, and a leadership presence both on and off the field.
Thriving in Provincial and Academy Cricket
Stepping up to Leinster Lightning and the Ireland Wolves brought new challenges along with valuable lessons. “You learn a lot from the international players: to back your abilities and play your game,” he says. “One thing I’ve really taken on board is not to fear failure, just trust the process.”
His debut for Leinster was a major milestone. “The nerves were real, but I had a lot of backing from teammates and coaches.” On the Wolves tour, he faced intense conditions. “Playing in 40+ degrees against strong opposition was tough but adapting to that was a real challenge.”
Memorable Milestones and Mindset
One of his proudest moments came with a match-winning 143 not out for Leinster Lightning. “Opening the batting, I wanted to set a good platform. We lost four wickets quickly, so I had to rebuild. After reaching 50, everything started to click. I carried my bat through the innings—my first professional hundred—and hopefully the first of many.”
Preparation for big games is straightforward for Chris: “I like chilling before a game, not overthinking. I relax, play PlayStation with my brother and cousin, and keep my energy for the match.”
Aspirations: Domestically and Internationally
Despite his progress, Chris knows there’s work ahead. “I still feel like I have a long way to go. I’m working hard to improve weaker areas, stay fit, and enjoy every opportunity.”
His domestic goal is simple: “Keep scoring runs for Leinster and help Balbriggan win games and trophies. I want to improve my T20 game and get more opportunities in that format.”
Internationally, the dream is clear: “Hopefully I’ll debut for Ireland soon. I want to play as many games as possible, help qualify for World Cups, and who knows…maybe even win some trophies.”

Support Systems and Life Beyond Cricket
Behind the cricketer is a strong support network. “My parents and brother have always been there for me. Especially my mom, who drove me to every game and supported my move to Ireland. It’s tough being away from them, but we talk every day.”
Mentors like Wynand Schmitt and Balbriggan Club Coach Andre Botha have shaped his journey. “Wynand helped my batting and personal growth. Andre ‘Boatsy’ has backed me since I moved to Ireland, helping me trust in my abilities.”
Chris also credits the Irish family he’s been staying with: “They’ve made Ireland feel like a second home.”
Balancing life beyond cricket is important. “I work part-time, go to the gym, spend time with my Girlfriend, who also joined Balbriggan this year and the cricket lads. I enjoy PlayStation, Netflix, tennis, and paddle.”
From backyard beginnings to national contention, Chris embodies the spirit of modern Irish cricket: talented, grounded, and ever-evolving.
As he continues to rise, he remains a proud product of Balbriggan Cricket Club. A club that believed in him, and a player who now inspires the next generation. Our club is supported by our weekly lotto fundraiser, without this we wouldn’t be able to develop the next generation!
